This Day in Wrestling History (1/2) – Arn Anderson Defeated The Great Muta to Reclaim the WCW Television Championship

This day in wrestling history gave a us a modern classic between two of the best to ever wrestle, and it helps that it’s two of our favorite as well — Arn Anderson and The Great Muta.

This wasn’t just a great match, it helped cement Arn in WCW after he came back from his time in the WWE where he was part of the Heenan Family. He teamed with Tully Blanchard as the Brainbusters and were former WWE tag champions.

Coming back home is never easy, and on January 2, 1990 Arn did just that and The Great Muta did everything in his power to help him get over in his return.

    Home again

In his return, Arn became a face for one of the few times in his career, and it helped set things up for him when he challenged The Great Muta for the Television title on the Power Hour.

Of course, Arn didn’t enjoy it as much as most, and he explained why in an RF shoot interview. Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the quotes in this article.

“Muta was as polished as anybody. He was great. I did not enjoy the matches. I was cast in the wrong role.

“I was the good guy. Hugely miscast. Fish out of water. Thank God it was short lived.” – Arn Anderson, RF shoot interview.

He went into greater detail on The Arn Show:

“When I came back from WWF at the time, Muta had been the Television Champion for a bit and with Gary Hart. In those days, if you were a champion on WCW television or I would imagine Vince’s television, you were a bigger star in Japan so he was compiling credits and he was compiling good TV time, which was just going to benefit him when he went back to Japan and the Television Title, he got to go out as I explained earlier and have enough time on every show and do all the stuff that he could do and he was very, very good.

“Smooth as he could possibly be and Gary Hart was one of those situations that fit perfectly as his manager and they were a good unit and I was fortunate enough that they put me over for that TV title and I beat a guy that was red-hot at the time and it helped me coming back. It gave me some some credibility and right off the get-go, it put a little rocket on my ass.” – Arn Anderson, The Arn Show, October 22, 2019.

Arn is best remembered as the Enforcer for the Four Horsemen, but it’s often the little things that help everyone stand out and his skills in the ring, whether singles or tag team, can’t be overshadowed.

He’s one of the best ever, and this day in wrestling history is a great side note to the breadth of his career.
