It should come as no surprise that one half of The Acclaimed is one of wrestling’s best gay stars. Anthony Bowens has been proudly out in a previously harsh industry, and is shining in AEW. While no gold has found him yet – fans feel it’s only a matter of time before The Acclaimed claim the AEW World Tag Team Championships. However, that’s not his only goal – as he wants to become one of wrestlings first gay world champions.
Anothny Bowens Has The Potential To be AEW’s First Openly Gay World Champion
While speaking with PinkNews.co, Bowens would have the interviewer say they’d love to see him as AEW World Champion, and Bowens loved the sounds of that. However, he won’t be able to be the first openly gay world champion – as AC Mack has already accomplished this, recently defeating Alex Shelley to win the IWTV World Championship, which has recently been recognized by Pro Wrestling Illustrated as an active World Championship.
However, there is still history to be made with becoming the first openly gay AEW World Champion – and Bowens is someone who would love to do that. His recent matches with Bryan Danielson & Jon Moxley showed his potential as a singles star – and fans love The Acclaimed. He’s popular, skilled and young – which gives him good chances of becoming champion.
Bowens Chose AEW Over WWE Due To Nyla Rose & Sonny Kiss
When it comes to why he chose AEW as a destination over WWE, it came down to how AEW presented their LGBTQ+ stars. WWE generally shys away from promotion of their LGBTQ+ talents outside of pride month – which is something AEW doesn’t have issues with. Bowens said the following in regards to choosing AEW over WWE.
“You see people online saying stuff about how we’re not a very diverse roster. But when AEW opened up, that’s when my focus shifted from, “Hey, I really want to be in WWE,” to, “I really want to be in AEW.”
The product itself was hot but then, when I got down there, the locker room was so relaxed and you weren’t walking on eggshells and everyone was very friendly. I saw Nyla and Sonny walking around just openly being themselves and there was no judgement there.
They encourage you to be your best self, and I thought that was very cool. It made AEW more appealing to me; knowing that I didn’t have to put up any walls or any fronts or be wondering, like, who here is against me and who here is my friend. I look forward to coming to work every single week, seeing my friends and putting on a good show.”
