Seventy years since Queen Elizabeth ascended the British throne. The longest-reigning monarch in British history was crowned at the age of 25 following the death of her father King George VI. The royal family has come under intense public scrutiny since the rebellion and departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as top members of the royal house in 2020. However, the sexual allegation against Prince Andrew that peaked in the early part of this year added more fuel to the negative noise surrounding the royal house.
Since their resignation, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lived in the United States without stepping a foot in the UK.
Their continued domicile in the US forced the Queen to strip them of their royal titles and patronages and just recently gift one of Harry’s former patronages to Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William. On the contrary, Prince Andrew’s sexual lawsuit has dwindled the reputation of the royal family since the turn of the year.
The Duke of York who is the second son of the Queen and ninth in sequence to the throne is set to stand trial after a Judge sitting in a US court overruled his motion to terminate a sex case filed against him. Prince Andrew is accused by one Virginia Giuffre of severally abusing her while she was still a minor some years ago.
Although the Queen has reacted swiftly by stripping the 61-year old Duke of York of his royal patronages and military titles, the lawsuit has already dented the status of the British royal family.
Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee anniversary celebration was supposed to focus on the achievements of the historic monarch, however, the actions of her son Prince Andrew and grandson Prince Harry have created an atmosphere of controversy that has marred the reputation of the royal family in this unprecedented moment.
