With all the of the releases and firings WWE has been doing with in ring talent, producers, and writers, fans have been wondering whether Shawn Michaels is next on the list.
It’s a legitimate question given pretty much ever bit of Triple H’s fingerprints on NXT have been wiped away since the rebrand.
What’s curious about this is Jim Cornette mentioned something along these lines on his podcast, and he pointed out Michaels was a Vince McMahon guy before Hunter married into the McMahon family, so he’s safe.
That could be a reason why Michaels could be safe, and given the number of chances Vince gave him over the years there’s definitely some loyalty there.
But there could be another reason.
NXT 2.0 is Shawn Michael’s show
There’s an argument that Shawn Michaels is now running NXT 2.0 in a similar capacity that Triple H ran the original NXT, but with less autonomy as Michaels reports to Bruce Prichard.
This new revelation came from Dave Meltzer on “Wrestling Observer Radio.”
Special thanks to Inside the Ropes for the following transcript of Meltzer’s comments.
“It’s interesting because it’s basically Shawn Michaels’ thing right now, is this new NXT. When he was brought in, it was never to be this. He was brought in to be a coach, but now he’s pretty much ‘the guy’, and they’re very high on him right now as far as his work.
“When they got rid of everybody that was Levesque’s (Triple H’s) guys – they didn’t get rid of everyone who was Levesque’s guys but they got rid of a lot of people who were Levesque’s guys… they’re not gonna fire Shawn Michaels, at all. That would beyond stun me. Especially right now, because they’re very high on him right now.”
If true, this makes sense as NXT 2.0 has the type of flair the Heartbreak Kid had, just like the old black and gold brand was more workmanlike like Triple H.
Is he holding a spot?
Given their friendship, we doubt Michaels took the position from Hunter, but we also don’t think he’s just keeping the seat warm.
There have been reports that Hunter hasn’t had anything to do with the new NXT since his surgery and there’s been no released time table for his return.
It stands to reason he could be moving into a more supervisory or recruiting role without the stress of running a show.
