Zendaya has hit back at her critics in response to her role in the TV series ‘Euphoria’ after she was accused of glorifying substance abuse.
Zendaya Responds To Accusations That Her Character In ‘Euphoria’ Glorifies Substance Abuse-It Is To ‘Help People Feel A Little Bit Less Alone’
In the show, Zendaya plays a character by the name of Rue Bennett. And given that she is not exactly happy in her life, a combination of things with substance abuse leads to Rue running away from her family.
While her family try to get her the necessary help that she needs, things have been made complicated by virtue of the fact that Rue is also contemplating the thought of suicide.
In response to the role, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) had a lot to say on the matter. In an official statement, they condemned the show for the following reasons.
A representative said: “[The show has] misguidedly glorif[ies] and erroneously depict[s] high school student drug use, addiction, anonymous sex, violence, and other destructive behaviors as common and widespread in today’s world.”
Zendaya was clearly not happy with the way that she had been portrayed, and she made sure that she let her fans know exactly what she was hoping to get out from the character.
Rather than glorifying anything for that matter, the actress spoke on how it was designed to make people feel that they were not alone. And these are naturally uncomfortable issues that people go through.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zendaya said: “Our show is in no way a moral tale to teach people how to live their life or what they should be doing.
“If anything, the feeling behind Euphoria, or whatever we have always been trying to do with it, is to hopefully help people feel a little bit less alone in their experience and their pain.”
The response from the fans was very positive, as they felt that Zendaya’s storytelling and acting was very impressive. So much so that they resonated with what she was trying to convey. One person wrote: “Top tier acting. It felt so real.”
