The Royal family have been slammed after a member of the British public described them as ‘benefit scroungers.’

This sentiment summed up the growing uneasiness that has emerged in response to the monarchy. This was on the grounds that people cannot reconcile why the Royal family should be funded through taxpayer money to no end, when the country continues to suffer from social issues that have plagued ordinary people.
And that is precisely how a caller by the name of Sean felt when he rang up LBC Radio. And he let the world know in no uncertain terms that he was not happy with the monarchy at all.
In his comments, he said: “It’s outdated! You know they tell people on benefits that they’re scroungers, you’ve got the biggest family in the country on benefits, that are scroungers.”
Sean’s comments are going to resonate with people for the following reasons. First of all, the economic conditions have not been helped by the pandemic.
Not only that, but the current Russia-Ukraine war which threatens to increase energy bills throughout the world has also not helped matters. And this economic uncertainty has played a huge part in Sean’s reasoning.
Secondly, with other countries looking to distance themselves from the monarchy including Jamaica who declared that they were planning on leaving the Commonwealth at some point in the future, there is an argument that the monarchy is no longer needed.
Sean added: “You know people are struggling with heating. The Royals are going to get their heating paid for, this is why I can’t understand why one family gets so much and other people suffer.”
The response on social media was in agreement with Sean. A significant proportion of people felt that it was time for the monarchy to step down, as it could no longer be justified.
One person wrote: “Dam right, and there wealth is all stolen wealth from pillaging the developing world.” It is clear that the Royal Family is facing a serious challenge to its legitimacy.
