Brock Lesnar has remained an interesting person and character since he first stepped into a WWE ring, and his recent appearance on the Michael Kay Show only added to it.
Lesnar was ready to walk quietly into retirement and enjoy himself after his contract expired in 2020 after he lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre.
As things worked out, pretty much as they always do in wrestling, he came back for a good payday when Vince McMahon called. Lesnar talked about it and how it brought things full circle.
Special thanks to @wrestling_mpw for the transcripts used in this article.
“When I was younger I thought, I wanna retire when I’m 40,” said Lesnar. “I actually retired when COVID hit and my contract was up in 2020. Full circle Brock Lesnar story, I had my first wrestling match in Minnesota was in a garage with no people. 20 years later, had a WWE Title match at WrestleMania in a warehouse in front of no people. 20 years, full circle. I was like ‘I’m out.’”
And when he was asked why he came out of retirement, Lesnar responded with: “Cha-ching! [money]”
The real Lesnar
Wrestling blurs the line between what’s real and what’s not so well it’s often impossible to tell who is being legitimate or not.
We’ve heard for years that Lesnar is an intelligent individual, and we’re finally getting to see that as Paul Heyman isn’t speaking for him. He carries himself well and is better on the mic than many including us suspected.
This is something Vince McMahon touched on when he was on The Pat McAfee Show. Vince had nothing but positive things to say about Lesnar and that his size often tricks people into thinking he’s not intelligent.
“An extraordinary human being. A smart son of a b-tch. Oh my God, yeah. In general, he’s really f-cking intelligent. And again, there are people, you know, again, that’s a misperception when you have someone that big, and, you know, ‘oh yeah, well, he’s a neanderthal.’ Okay, he looks like a neanderthal but he’s smarter than you, pal.”
Vince made a great point as it’s a stereotype towards most athletes, but he also talked about his appreciate for everyone that’s worked for the WWE.
“It’s not like I forget people. You know, I love for them to stay in touch with me but I’m busy today doing this. We’re busy, busy doing other things. But I don’t lose contact with those individuals you mentioned. You know, some that are further down the line, I do. I try to have — make sure our company stays in contact with them. Yeah, it’s good business, but, you know, everyone helped paved the way to where we are now and I’m always appreciative. You know, however small that was or how big that was, (I’m) always appreciative for everyone who ever stepped in the ring and helped us to get to where we are now.”
There are many reasons for fans to believe otherwise, but there have been plenty of reports that Vince is a good person. We only get to see his businessman side.
This explains how so many former talents are willing to come back to the WWE either out of loyalty or for the payday, even if they consider themselves retired.
