Director Jane Campion has called out Sam Elliott over his prior homophobic comments slamming the “Power of the Dog” movie.

Sam, for his part, took offence to the movie on the basis that it did not live up to what a cowboy movie should be.
He took particular offence to the role of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character Phil Burbank, who is a homosexual concealing his sexuality and is hostile to his sister-in-law, Rose, played by Kirsten Dunst.
In the process of condemning the movie, Sam did not hold back on his words. In a prior interview on the ‘WTF With Marc Maron podcast,’ Sam said: “[Its] a piece of sh*t.
“They’re running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions of homosexuality throughout the f–king movie.”
These comments got the attention of Jane very quickly. But rather than engaging in a back-and-forth with the actor, she came up with a novel way of challenging the actor.
She gave him an ultimatum in traditional cowboy style by stating that they should have a shootout to settle this dispute once and for all.
Although it is clear that her comments were in jest, that did not prevent her from taking it seriously though. In an official statement, she said: “OK, Sam, let’s meet down at the Warner Bros. lot for a shootout!
“I’m bringing Doctor Strange [the Marvel character portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of her latest film] with me!”
Sam has yet to respond to these comments, but that did not stop people on social media from having their own say on the matter. The response from the fans on social media was fully in agreement with Jane.
They praised her for the fact that they believed the movie was a success, despite what Sam had said. One person wrote: “Like I am in love with this lady. Power of The Dog was so good, subtle and unexpected. I loved it.”
