Cain Velasquez Denied Bail in Alleged Paedophile Shooting
He’s currently behind bars following a high-speed car chase over eleven miles in San Jose, in which Velasquez shot at Goularte, missing him and injuring his 63-year-old stepfather.
Judge Shelyna Brown said that, given Velasquez’s actions, they cannot in good conscience release him into the general public again.
“It is clear to this court that there is clear and convincing evidence that there is a substantial likelihood that release would result in great bodily injury, not just to the named complaining witnesses in this case but to Santa Clara residents at large.
This case involves allegations of extreme recklessness to human life. Ramming a vehicle in the middle of the day where are citizens are out driving, going about their business and shooting out of a car at other individuals, which is reckless by any standard.
Anyone could have been injured. Anyone could have been killed and when this court looks at article 1, section 12, it is this level of risk that the court must take into consideration.
With that said, this court is making the ruling that the risk is too great and that there will be no bail set at this time.” Cain Velasquez will remain behind bars awaiting sentencing.
Velasquez was arrested after he confronted and chased Harry Goularte, allegedly charged with molesting a four-year-old relative of Velasquez’s at a day care run by Goularte’s mother. Goularte was supposedly released on bail, at which point Cain Velasquez pursued the alleged child molester with his .40 caliber pistol. Goularte’s stepfather, who was in the car with Harry Goularte, was shot during the pursuit and taken to hospital for non life threatening injuries.
Cain Velasquez, if convicted, may face up to twenty years in prison. Harry Goularte remains free as of this writing. Many members of the MMA community have expressed their support for Cain Velasquez in the wake of this incident. Dana White, Joe Rogan, and many of Velasquez’s fellow fighters have either praised or empathized with his actions.
