Right now, we’re nearly at the end of the 2022 New Japan Cup – but there’s little time to waste in a year. Their next major tournament has been announced – as Best of the Super Juniors returns to it’s usual spot in the spring. For the past two years, BoSJ has been running alongside World Tag League in December – but now things are back to the old norm.
Best of The Super Juniors Will Kick Off On May 15th
The tournament will kick off on May 15th, with the finals set for June 3rd in the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. No names have been announced for the tournament, but we can expect a similar field to the 2021 tournament.
Hiromu Takahashi, SHO, YOH, El Desperado, DOUKI, Master Wato, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Robbie Eagles, Ryusuke Taguchi, El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori are all expected. Others like Tiger Mask, TAKA Michinoku and Dick Togo also remain as veteran options.
There is a hope that we get some outside names, with the likes of CIMA and Minoru Tanaka hopeful after appearing in NJPW throughout 2022. CIMA is currently set to face Kazuchika Okada in the quarterfinals of the New Japan Cup – having gotten the upset win over Hirooki Goto to get this far.
Hiromu Takahashi was the winner of the 2021 tournament, defeating YOH in the finals. The current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion is El Desperado, who is expected to defend against SHO soon.
April Will Be A Quiet Month For New Japan Pro Wrestling – Before Things Heat Up For Summer
Between now and then, NJPW has the finals of the New Japan Cup and Wrestling Dontaku on their schedule. The Hyper Fight and Golden Series Tours will bridge the gap, and could contain some title matches throughout the month of April.
Following Best of the Super Juniors, we will see Dominion in June, likely from Osaka-jō Hall. After this, we’ll be on the way to the G1 Climax, which will taken over the bulk of the summer for NJPW. Things will cool down a bit in April, before things start getting intense with the G1 Climax.
