Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip clashed with the US Secret Service during Barack Obama’s visit to the UK in 2016. The then President of the United States and his wife Michelle visited the UK during the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration.
The Royals Won The “Battle”
Royal expert, Robert Hardman has claimed that the royals clashed with the US Secret Service and won. According to Harding, Prince Philip offered to drive the world leader and his wife and the Secret Service declined but the Duke and his wife found a way to convince the Obamas to join their ride.

Mr. Hardman said, “The Obamas wanted to come and be the first non-family people to say Happy 90th birthday to the Queen when she turned 90 in 2016. They flew in by helicopter to Windsor Great Park and the royals wanted to pick them up in the park where they landed.
But the Secret Service said, ‘no, we’re the only people who drive the president’ and it went right to the top. The royal expert continued, “It’s the only time in the entire Obama presidency when the couple were driven by someone other than a White House agent, they were driven by Prince Philip with the Queen in the back with Michelle.”
TV Presenter Naga Munchetty added that “I love that the Secret Service went up against the Queen and never let it be in doubt that the Queen won.” It is understood that the US secret service was “frightened” when the then 94-year-old Duke entered the driver’s seat. After the little ride, Barack Obama had remarked.
“I have to say I have never been driven by a Duke of Edinburgh before, but I can report it was very smooth.” Prince Philip later handed over his driving license in 2019 after he was entangled in a severe crash near the Queen’s Sandringham estate in January 2019. His Land Rover tumbled after ramming with a car, carrying two women who suffered mild wounds, and a nine-month-old baby who came out unhurt.
