This day in wrestling history is a personal favorite of mine as I’m a huge Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage fan, but also because this match was one for the ages.
It had everything from the execution to the return of Miss Elizabeth to Savage’s side. It was the epitome of awesome storytelling we don’t get to see much of anymore, and it paid off in a spectacular fashion.
As with any great story, there needs to be a beginning, and this one had a head ringing entrance.
Clocked him good
At the 1991 Royal Rumble, the Ultimate Warrior was defending the WWF World Heavyweight Championship against Sgt. Slaughter when Savage came out and nailed him between the eyes with his scepter.
According Slaughter, it was a legit shot that knocked the Warrior out cold and he had to cut their match short with a pin because of it.
It was in retaliation for Warrior allegedly injuring Savage’s arm previously.
But there’s nothing like real life drama to spice up the storylines, and this catapulted Savage from a higher mid card position into the upper echelon once again.
While the build up to their match was lackluster, it did the event justice as it was a Career vs. Career match, and that wasn’t a normal thing at the time.
It was also during a period when Vince McMahon allegedly wanted Savage to transition to commentary as he didn’t think Savage could wrestle anymore due to his age or other issues.
Vince was obviously mistaken, and our timeline might be a little as well.
Return of Miss Elizabeth
While Warrior won a nailbiter as both hit their finishers without success, something that was extremely rare then, Savage was left in the ring at the mercy of Queen Sheri.
Sheri had enjoyed a good run as Savage’s queen, but when her gravy train ended (storyline), he took out her frustrations on an exhausted Savage.
Prior to this, the camera and commentators noticed Miss Elizabeth in the crowd, and having taken all she could, she entered the ring and threw Sheri off Savage.
It marked their reunion in WWE that brought tons of tears to fans’ eyes as they were wrestling’s true It couple. They had a magic that hasn’t been duplicated since despite many attempts, and it was the perfect ending to the match.
For many fans, this match was the true main event of WrestleMania VII as it took us on an emotional roller coaster we’ve rarely experienced, making it one for the ages.
