Amy Schumer has opened up on how one of her Oscar jokes led to her receiving death threats.
Amy Schumer Received Death Threats Over Her Oscars Joke About Kirsten Dunst-‘The Secret Service Reached Out’
This ultimately went under the radar by virtue of the fact that Will Smith’s slapgate incident involving Chris Rock dominated the headlines.
But in and amongst that scandal, the Oscars host expanded on how her joke at pretending that Kirsten Dunst was a ‘seat filler’ got her facing some serious backlash.
In an interview on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ Amy said: “I got death threats…They were so bad the Secret Service reached out, yeah, about that bit. I’m like, ‘I think you have the wrong number.
“This is Amy, not Will [Smith]. You must have the wrong number.'” These comments merely highlighted the dangers that comedians are now facing.
They are ultimately having to second-guess their material, which will inadvertently lead to a situation where comedians no longer feel comfortable in being able to express themselves.
And that goes against the very nature of comedy that has been predicated upon freedom of speech and being able to express your views without any restrictions.
Despite what people may think of Amy, it is important to bear in mind the following reasons when judging her. First of all, the jokes had reportedly been run by the people that were going to be impacted.
Therefore, Kirsten would have been fully aware of what Amy was going to do. Secondly, in the aftermath of the whole debacle, Amy made it very clear that she had nothing but respect for the actress.
In another statement, she remarked: “Hey I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too! That was a choreographed bit she was in on. Wouldn’t disrespect that queen like that.”
Amy, just like other comedians in general, are now facing some serious problems within their profession. The rise of cancel culture has not made things easier, which has come to the detriment of comedians and fans alike.
Surely, things are now getting out of hand. So there you have it folks. What do you think about all of this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
