Disney has confirmed that a same-sex scene in the movie ‘Lightyear’ has been restored after its initial removal.
Disney’s Lightyear Reinstates A Same-Sex Kissing Scene But Not Everyone Is Happy-‘Just Stop It, It’s A Film For Children!’
According to reports, a same-sex kiss was set to be included in the film before being removed. However, following the passing of the “Don’t Say Gay’ bill in Florida, there was a certain amount of backlash.
After all, the legislation prevented the discussion of gender and sexual orientation in kindergarten up to grade 3. That sentiment then quickly transpired towards members who worked with Disney, as they began to express their dissatisfaction with perceived censorship.
In a letter written by employees working for Disney, they said: “[Disney wanted to remove] nearly every moment of overtly gay affection.
“Regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar.” But now it has been restored to the original premise.
With that being said, fans can expect to see the scene within the first half an hour of the movie involving the character of Alisha Hawthorne, who is Buzz’s best friend and commander.
Despite the controversy surrounding this decision, it is important to bear in mind that this is not the first movie to include an LGBTQ character.
Disney’s film “Onward,’ just so happens to include a police officer in the form of a cyclops called Specter, who is known to have a girlfriend.
And given that the character of Specter was voiced by Lena Waithe, who has openly come out as a Lesbian, Disney is now continuing what has already been done to some extent.
The response on social media was mixed. While a certain subset of people welcomed this as a way to satisfy a broader audience, others were of the view that by including such themes in a children’s movie, it would only make it inappropriate.
One person wrote: “Just stop it, it’s a film for Children!” Time will tell how the fans respond to this at the box office. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
