Elton John has spoken out on how he and his husband David Furnish were prevented from adopting a Ukrainian orphan.
Elton John Was Prevented From Adopting A Ukrainian Baby Because He Was Gay
Elton, for his part, was hell-bent on becoming a parent. And during the course of that process, he was wanting to adopt a baby named Lev. However, given that Elton is gay, he was prevented from adopting him.
It is no secret that homosexuality is frowned upon in some Eastern-European countires one of which includes Ukraine. In an interview on the iHeartRadio’s “Dua Lipa: At Your Service podcast, Elton said: “Because I was gay, I wasn’t allowed to anyway.”
Nevertheless, that experience did not prevent Elton and his husband from wanting to be parents. So much so that the duo decided to take this very seriously.
The singer admitted how David had approached him about taking the next steps to make this happen. And soon enough, that is precisely what happened. The couple are now parents to two children: Elijah and Zachary.
But had it not been for what happened in Ukraine, then this may not have happened. Elton added: “David said, ‘Well, what do you think about having kids.
“This little boy was telling me something…that’s when we decided to have children, because of this little boy in Ukraine.” In the country’s defence, it is important to bear in mind the following factors.
First of all, Ukrainian law at the time prevented anyone from adopting a child if they were older than 45. Therefore, Elton was out of the equation as at the time, he was 62.
Secondly, the condition was also on the basis that the person adopting was married. Ukrainian law did not recognise gay marriage, which also proved to be a stumbling block. Despite Elton being a well-renowned musician, the law had to apply to everyone the same.
Yuriy Pavlenko, who happened to be the country’s Family, Youth and Sports Minister, had this to say at the time: “The law is the same for everybody: for a president, for a minister, for Elton John.”
So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
