If a diss flies over your head or didn’t have a hostile tone, were you even dissed? This is the stance Faizon Love is taking after a jab from Jay-Z on Pusha T’s “Neck & Wrist”.
Faizon Love Dismisses Jay-Z Jab on Pusha T’s “Neck & Wrist”
So, why would it be expected that comedian Faizon Love–definitely not a rapper–respond or catch on to a Jay-Z verse that isn’t on a Jay-Z album? Is this something that came out of nowhere and seems random? Not at all.
It all goes back to 2020 when Love went on two podcasts—Hip-Hop Uncensored and Vlad TV. He brought up something that had been discussed for years but most just dropped it because—why bother? We’re in a time when people who have testified to the government on others doing dirt can still mount strong record sales.
C’mon, it’s 2022.
However, there are still hip-hop fans who wonder: Did Jay-Z really sell coke back in the day? In those two interviews, Faizon Love stated that he believed Jay-Z didn’t sell coke. As a matter of fact, during his Hip-Hop Uncensored appearance, he said:
“I like Jay-Z. I like him as a guy, and the whole thing he created about this fake dope dealing, that’s when I stopped liking him. This n***a ain’t sold no cocaine in his life—I don’t think he’s ever won a fight.”
During his first interview with Vlad on Jay’s past, he described the Grammy magnet as not actively participating in illicit commerce but being there while eating chips. So, that simmered for a few years. Former Jay-Z foe Cam’ron–who Love also dissed years ago—even defended the legitimacy of The Blueprint artist’s coke selling past.
Then we got Jay-Z’s feature on “Neck & Wrist” and a verse that Love didn’t initially pick up on:
The phase I’m on, love, I wouldn’t believe it either
I’d be like, “JAY-Z’s a cheater,” I wouldn’t listen to reason either
All I know is he’s a felon, how is he sellin’?
The two bolded lyrics refer to Faizon Love and Jay’s debut album Reasonable Doubt from 1996. In his interview with DJ Vlad posted on Thursday, April 14, Love said that he didn’t get the verse at first and people were asking him about a response.
He admitted he wasn’t a rapper and had no bars, also he thought nothing of it since there wasn’t a hostile tone. Honestly, that’s not even the most interesting part of this portion of the interview. Stick around for DJ Vlad and Faizon doing coke business math based on a Jay-Z verse. If anything, Love views it more as a reference than an outright diss.
“Neck & Wrist” will be on Pusha T’s upcoming fourth album It’s Almost Dry. The album is a follow-up to the acclaimed 2018 release DAYTONA.
