Dominik Mysterio has been an interesting character in the WWE since he debuted, and fans opinions of him vary from one end of the spectrum to the other.
It was fun to watch him early on, but lately he seems to be stuck in a rut as a photo copy of Rey Mysterio.
Dominik has done everything he can to emulate and honor his father, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But now he comes across more like a lanky copy of Rey instead of his own person, and it may be time for him to go back to development to work on that.
He may be doing that since he’s expected to be out a while following Veer’s assault on Monday’s Raw and Rey returns to feud with Veer.
Or he may not. It’s up to him and the WWE. It’s one of the knocks against Dominik and could hold up his career at some point, but there’s more to it.
Family ties
As we’ve seen with Charlotte Flair, fans are quick to jump on someone and accuse them of riding their famous parents’ coattails.
It’s an argument that may have grounds given Dominik has been teamed with Rey since the beginning, but it’s been reported that’s being done so Rey can make sure Dominik is taken care of.
Rey’s a great mentor, but the WWE has wasted little opportunity to promote their father sun relationship by pushing them to win tag titles and into other storylines, including a match at WrestleMania.
Jim Cornette shared his thoughts when reviewing The Mysterios vs. The Miz and Logan Paul at WrestleMania 38 on his podcast.
“Not everybody’s relative needs to be allowed to wrestle at WrestleMania.
“Logan Paul is an athlete, he looks like an athlete, he’s had shoot fights. Dominik Mysterio works hard, he can do stuff, you can tell he’s put a lot in his wrestling training, but he has put absolutely nothing in his physical training and he looks like the counter guy at Circuit City.
“And – I love his father, great talent – I’ve never met this kid and I’m not trying to bury him as a horrible person, but I don’t think that he looks visually like a Superstar that should be wrestling on the biggest stage in the entire business.”
Cornette has stated several times he’s not a fan of wrestlers like look like ordinary guys, and to be fair he has a point there.
We expect them to look well built, muscular, and intimidating. This doesn’t mean they have to be huge and full of steroids, but we have to be able to buy into what they’re selling.
For some, like the Miz and Kofi Kingston, they make it work because they connect with the fans. For Dominik, it feels like he’s Rey 2.0 to us.
What do you think? Should Dominik add some bulk and add to his move list or should he stay on the lath he’s on? Let us know in the comments below.
