RHONY: Leah McSweeney Admits She ‘Could Have Died’ From Her Substance Abuse Issues
The star of the ‘Real Housewives of New York City’ has spoken extensively about her issues in the past. And during the earlier part of her upbringing, the changes in her life led her to dabbling in drugs and alcohol.
Leah was expelled from her Catholic high school, coupled with the fact that her family had decided to move from their area. And with so many changes happening in a short space of time, Leah resorted to substances as a way to cope.
This included using speed, vicodin, cocaine and even meth. While she did manage to overcome her problems, at one point, she resented her parents who had taken decisive action.
They informed Leah that she would have to enter rehab, but looking back, it was worth it. In an interview with Page Six, she said: “[I] held [that] against them for years and years.
“When I finally got sober in 2009 and was in a 12-Step program and did all that work, I realised how if they hadn’t done that, I could have died. I wouldn’t have the life that I have now, so I’m so grateful for that.”
Nevertheless, her troubles resurfaced in the run-up to the 12th season of the show. After being sober for 10-years, she had uncharacteristically decided to start drinking again.
Although she did try to play down that she was having a relapse, the very fact of the matter is that she had fallen off the wagon. But that is when she realised she needed to take measures to get herself back sober.
And now that she has managed to do so, she has no intentions of ever going back to that bad place. She added: “Anyone that’s sober knows to to not drink for 10 years – it’s huge. It’s a big deal.”
It is great to Leah in a much better place, and hopefully going forward, things continue to stay that way. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
