The Weeknd Threatened To Pull Out Of Coachella 2022 If He Was Not Paid The Same As Kanye West
The Weeknd was drafted in as a replacement for the rapper after it was confirmed that he would not be performing in light of his recent antics, which have resulted in negative public opinion.
And given that Kanye was set to receive a reported $8.5 million, The Weeknd was looking to recoup a similar amount. And yet, it seems that the organizers had other plans with claims that they were only willing to pay $1 million and pocket the rest. Naturally, that had not gone down very well.
A source said: “Even after Coachella announced the new lineup on Wednesday, a deal wasn’t in place for The Weeknd, who threatened to pull out at an hour’s notice if he didn’t get the same deal as Kanye.”
With the festival facing the prospect of having to find another replacement at such short notice, it was clear that the band held all the cards. After all, there was only so much that fans were going to put up with.
As a result, the organisers had no option but to agree to the band’s demands. And by the looks of it, things have now been resolved.
The source added: “Finally, on Wednesday — faced with the prospect of a second headline act pulling out of Coachella at the last minute — Anschutz’s company caved and agreed to pay The Weeknd the same money.”
In reality, the band’s decision was fully justified. Not only did they have to agree to attend on short notice, but they are one of the biggest bands in the world.
And they should be paid in a manner that reflects their success. Although some may argue that Kanye is a bigger name, The Weeknd is still nevertheless worthy replacements.
Time will tell how their performance is received, but given everything that they are being paid, the pressure is on them to deliver. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
