When Darby Allin made his debut for AEW, he drew many comparisons to Jeff Hardy. Both have high risk styles, unique and marketable looks, and have an unmatched connection to their fans. That makes it all the more special that tonight, in an opening round match in the Owen Hart Memorial Cup – these two will meet for the first time ever in singles action.
It will be a battle of respect and high risks – ande only one man can move to the semi-finals. Allin & Hardy both requested this be a no-dq affair, as no one is wanting to see them exchange headlock takeovers. This was accepted, and fans are in for a dangerous spectacle with this match.
Jeff Hardy Uses Wrestling To Win A Hardcore Match
Allin wasted no time in this match, nailing a shotgun dropkick to send Hardy to the floor. Suicide Dive would land, and Allin grabbed some steel chairs. He’d build a bed of chairs, before walking into a flapjack from Hardy onto the steel steps. Jeff Hardy would nail a flying lariat, before looking for an elevated DDT. Allin was able to counter, but took a Twist Of Fate in the ropes.
A ladder would be pulled out from under the ring, but Hardy took too long getting it into the ring – only to take a Code Red for a near fall. Coffin Splash was blocked, and Hardy would hit a jawbreaker. Allin was driven into the chairs at ringside, as Hardy set up the massive ladder by the ropes. Hardy would scale the ladder, but Allin recovered before Hardy could soar.
Allin yanked Hardy down onto the ropes, before hitting a swanton bomb onto the steel chairs. Both men were seriously damaged by this, with Allin perhaps getting the worst of it. Hardy got to the apron, and Allin would miss a coffin drop. Allin would be hit with a Twist of Fate on the steel steps, before Hardy went for a Swanton Bomb and got nothing but steel.
In the ring, Darby nailed a coffin drop – only for Jeff Hardy to get a fast counter to get the pinfall victory. In an anything goes match, it was solid wrestling that got the win. Now, he faces Adam Cole next week for a spot in the finals.
