As kids, we all have dreams of winning titles with our favorite company. Sometimes we pretend we’re ourselves, an existing wrestler, or create a whole new persona.
Over the years, the WWE has inspired so many to become pro wrestlers it’s mindboggling and a testament to the effort the company put out character and storyline wise.
But sometimes something as simple as a title gets our attention and becomes a goal or dream title.
Drew McIntyre Wants to be European Champion
Whether it’s the retired Hardcore Championship, the original WWE women’s tag titles, Ten Pounds of Gold or more, each one brings us a special memory.
For Drew McIntyre that title is the European Championship that was eventually merged with the Intercontinental Championship after a five year, semi active run.
Another run in the cards?
The European Championship had a good start as the British Bulldog defeated Owen Hart to win in to conclude the tournament and went on to hold it for a record 206 days.
The title went on a brief hiatus after Shane McMahon won it and then retired as an undefeated champion but handed it to Mideon two months later.
In 2002, the European title was unified with the Intercontinental Championship in a ladder match where Intercontinental Champion RVD (Rob Van Dam) defeated European Champion Jeff Hardy in a ladder match.
McIntyre wants it
At the time it was retired, the European and Intercontinental Championships were pretty much the same thing, and the WWE didn’t want too many titles floating around.
That’s no longer a problem as they have ten championships between the two brands, but it’s something Drew McIntyre was mindful of when he discussed it on when he was on TalkSport.
“Yes! I just want it because when I was a kid and I saw it I was like ‘ah man, I want to be European champion.’ And now I can’t because it doesn’t exist right now. I don’t like too many titles and there are a lot right now, but I just wanted it when I was a kid. So just bring it back, let me win it and then I’ll retire it. You never want too many titles in the company because then it’s not as special. I think where we’re at right now is good, but give ol’ Drew the European title for young Drew.”
It’s good that Drew’s mindful of the WWE having too many titles and would like to win it as a personal goal and dream achieved.
Should the WWE bring back the European Championship for Drew? Let us know in the comments below.
