For the first time in many years, several questions have been asked about the Queen Elizabeth’s capability to continue as monarch. Since the end of last year, the longest serving monarch in British history has skipped several royal engagements.
Most senior royals like Prince Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and many others have done a commendable job of steadying the ship. However, many people now believe that the Queen may be making arrangements to hand over official responsibilities to her heir.
The Queen Is Facing “Episodic Mobility Problems”
On Tuesday, May 10th 2022, the Queen skipped the State Opening of Parliament. Throughout her reign as monarch, she has only failed to read her annual Queen’s speech on two occasions due to pregnancy. For this scenario, the Queen failed to turn up for the epic ceremony as a result of “episodic mobility problems.” The Prince of Wales read the speech in her place, while Prince William was also present at the ceremony.
The State Opening of Parliament is only the latest event that the monarch has skipped due to health challenges in the last couple of months. The Queen has missed the 2021 Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph, two significant services over the Easter period in April 2022 and several other functions.
The Queen just defied the odds to attend Prince Philip‘s commemoration service held on March 29th, 2022. At the event, the monarch was aided by a walking stick and Prince Andrew to her seat. She reportedly entered Westminter Abbey via a separate entrance from other royals to help her reach the chapel with ease.
The queen’s mobility issues come just after she contracted coronavirus in February 2022. She has even limited her foreign trips over the last few months. Her Majesty reportedly conducts her responsibilities from Windsor castle and organises most meetings virtually.
On March 7, 2022, she received Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada for talks at Windsor castle. Although, Prince Charles is becoming popular as the Queen’s rep at public events, no one can clearly claim that the Queen is turning over her responsibility to the Prince of Wales. However, many Brits strongly believe that it is time for the Queen to call it quits.
