Former Detroit Red Wings winger Sean Avery was convicted of attempted criminal mischief related to a 2019 incident. In that incident, Avery allegedly slammed his scooter into a car which left a hole in the driver’s door.
At the time of the bout of road rage, the driver’s 4-year-old daughter had been in the car sitting where the damage was done. Apparently, it all started over a bike lane in NYC’s West Village, became a disagreement, and escalated into this charge.
Former Detroit Red Wings Player Sean Avery Convicted of Attempted Criminal Mischief
According to TMZ, this is a misdemeanor charge and the sentence was handed down on June 16, 2022. Fortunately for Sean Avery, he received time served and is prohibited from contacting or being near the victims involved for three years.
Prior to the incident, it was reported that Avery was posting on Instagram about clearing the city’s bike lanes. He had been charged in 2019 after being offered a plea deal by prosecutors. Avery would can his lawyer and opted to defend himself in April 2022.
The court was met with resistance from the 12-year hockey vet—who resides in California—about the scheduling of his court date. Avery would also overestimate this case as something people would rally behind him on and only two supporters showed up at his hearing.
At most, Sean Avery was facing three months in jail.
What do you think of this situation? Did Avery exacerbate it greatly considering the max time he was facing? Is this a right cause, wrong hero situation? Should he have faced more time considering there was a small child in the car during his outburst?
