The recent injury to CM Punk is one that has taken the wrestling world by storm. Not even a week out from winning the AEW World Championship from Hangman Page, Punk would suffer a broken foot. This means AEW is going to name an Interim World Champion at Forbidden Door, the big crossover show with NJPW. AEW will decide who represents them at the show in this match, and NJPW has added a match to Dominion to decide if Hiroshi Tanahashi or Hirooki Goto will be in this match.
Hirooki Goto Knows That Beating Hiroshi Tanahashi Might Be His Only Path To Forbidden Door
Hiroshi Tanahashi was already announced to be facing CM Punk for the AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door, which led many to believe he would always be in the match to be named the Interim World Champion. However, he will have to earn his way to the match – and will meet an old rival on June 12th to do so.
Hirooki Goto is someone who fans have been wanting to see claim a world title since the start of his career. However, he’s the unfortunate holder of a record for the most failed attempts at winning the IWGP World Championship. Despite this, three New Japan Cup wins, a G1 Climax victory, and many reigns as IWGP Intercontinental Champion & NEVER Openweight Champion show his ability to win the big matches.
Tanahashi & Goto have met in many singles matches, and historically Tanahashi has had Goto beat. However, Goto knows that no matter what, Tanahashi will find himself on the card for Forbidden Door – while this match might be his only chance to make the show himself. This extra motivation might be what pushes him forward.
Jon Moxley Has A Path To The Ace Now
Meanwhile on the AEW side of things, they will open the coming episode of AEW Dynamite with a Battle Royale. The last man standing will go on to face the #1 ranked Jon Moxley in the main event. Whoever wins there will be the one to face the winner of Tanahashi vs. Goto.
Jon Moxley will be hoping to both get the win on Dynamite, and see Tanahashi win at Dominion – as he’s been calling out The Ace for a singles match for a long time now, and this is as close as he’s come. Whoever leaves Forbidden Door as Interim Champion is expected to meet CM Punk at All Out for the title unification match.
