CM Punk is the new AEW World Champion, but he’s not taking any time off. Just a few days after defeating Hangman Page for the belt, Punk is here tonight to team with the ROH World Tag Team Champions FTR, as they take on Max Caster & Gunn Club. Punk & FTR were spotted celebrating in the ring after Double or Nothing went off the air, so is tonight the start of a dominant new faction here in AEW?
FTR & CM Punk Start The Night With A Big Win
After a pre-match rap from Max Caster, Austin & Colton Gunn both messed up the town they were win, and the wheelchair bound Anthony Bowens would finish strong before scissoring with Billy Gunn and leading the crowd in the Ass-Boys chant – this match could start. Harwood would start with Colton, and was shoved into the corner. FTR would get the control before Wheeler hit a backdrop and an armdrag to ground Colton.
He’d be unable to keep him down, and Caster tagged in. Punk would get tagged into the match, and the new World Champion came off the top with a double axe handle. An aggressive Caster would be able to corner Punk, before choking him. Punk would respond with a springboard crossbody, before getting FTR back into the match, with Wheeler hitting a super powerslam.
Austin Gunn would be able to take Harwood down before stomping him into the corner. Caster & Ass Boys would show some control, cutting the ring in half effectively. However, Harwood would show some toughness and break free, before Punk & Wheeler were yanked off the apron as he went for a tag.
Double flapjack would land, but Harwood would kick out. Bowens would get a cheap shot with the crutch through the ropes, before Caster looked for a pinfall in the ring. Harwood would be able to hit the German Suplex on Caster, before both men threw lariats. Caster would make the tag to Austin, before Punk slipped on a Springboard Lariat attempt.
He’d regain his footing, and nail the rising knee in the corner before tossing Wheeler onto the opponents on the floor. Short Arm Lariat and diving elbow would follow, but Billy Gunn ran the distraction. Punk would powerbomb Austin into his father and hit the GTS before Big Rig for the win.
Hiroshi Tanahashi Is In The Building!
After the match, Punk would get on the microphone – and said that he imagines this is what drugs felt like. There’s still a lot of work to do, and he will need to keep improving as champion. He wouldn’t be here is his road to success wasn’t paved with mistakes. Fans can call him whatever they want, so long as they also call him the champ.
Harwood would chime in saying that yes, this is what drugs can feel like. However, he’s got some words for Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan, who attacked them last week. Maybe they should try it again without jumping from behind.
CM Punk would ask who he’s getting for Forbidden Door, and The Ace of the Universe himself would step out. Hiroshi Tanahashi is here, a grand slam champion in NJPW, and he will challenge for the AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door!
