AEW star Jeff Hardy’s arrest has been dominating the pro wrestling news since it happened, and the released dashcam footage of his arrest only adds another part to the story.
In the video, it shows Jeff pulled over in his white Dodge Charger on I-95 near Daytona Beach by Florida’s Highway Patrol, and things came close to escalating.
Jeff failed to initially comply with the officer’s orders after being pulled over and the officer drew his sidearm and was followed by two others doing the same.
Jeff then complied and rolled down his window, but looked like he put the car in drive by accident before getting it in park and getting out for his field sobriety test and for them to check his license and information.
Jeff reportedly appeared at the SlamDown VIII fan convention at Dave & Busters along with Mart and Reby Hardy in Orlando Sunday night, and he also did an acoustic performance at the show.
PWInsider reported that Jeff finished his obligations for Sunday by 10:30, which means he was arrested just under 12 hours later about an hour or so from the convention.
As it turned out, his license was suspended and when asked he said he was coming from North Carolina and going to North Carolina.
Could CTE be involved?
Jeff was told they received three or four 9-1-1 calls about his driving. He admitted he drank three shots of Fireball whiskey and he has a doctor’s appointment for a brain scan due to injuries suffered from wrestling.
This is pure conjecture on our part, but if he’s suffering from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), then that could explain his recent relapses the last couple of years as well as him just walking out of the WWE live event that eventually led to his firing.
People suffering from CTE tend to be moody and act out of character, so his decision making would be impaired and he could be looking to alcohol to help dull any pain or depression he could be feeling.
CTE is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head and first became prevalent in former football players and received mainstream recognition following professional athletes committing suicides and Chris Benoit murdering his family and killing himself.
While we await to see what the court decides, we wish him nothing but the best and hope he’s able to get all the help he needs.
As of now, he’s been suspended without pay from AEW and the Hardys Triple Threat Ladder Match with the Young Bucks and Jurassic Express for the AEW Tag Team Championship on AEW Dynamite on June 15.
