Right now, an injury bug has been running wild in professional wrestling. Numerous top stars have been put on the shelf, including two world champions. CM Punk in AEW suffered a broken foot, while Matt Cardona in NWA suffered a torn bicep. Had Cardona not been injured, he could have been part of one of the biggest matches in NWA history however.
Matt Cardona Hoped To Wrestle Ric Flair In His Final Match
Just before suffering a torn bicep, Cardona recorded an interview with Phil Strum from Under The Ring. During this, he would talk about how he wanted to be the final opponent of Ric Flair, as Flair looked to become a 17 time world champion before he officially retired.
“Would it be too cheap to say that I want to have Ric Flair’s last match for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship? That’s the talk of the wrestling business right now, Ric Flair having one more match. Does he want to be 17-time champ? If he does, I have the Ten Pounds of Gold. I can put Sweet Charlotte on the line. Think about it, The Nature Boy Ric Flair vs. Alwayz Ready Matt Cardona for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship.
Tell me that does not sell out an arena. I’ve heard the rumors of what the match will be and I’m sure it’s going to be a great match and fun for everybody. Don’t you think his last match ever should be for the Ten Pounds of Gold? You think of NWA, you think of the Ten Pounds of Gold, you think of Ric Flair. It would be fitting that he goes out, I don’t want to say on top, because I would beat him, but at least give him the opportunity to be a 17-time Worlds Heavyweight Champion. That’s historic – that’s the match…that writes itself.”
Upcoming NWA World Championship Defense With Nick Aldis Remains Unclear
As of right now, the planned match between Matt Cardona & Nick Aldis from NWA Alwayz Ready has not been cancelled. Cardona was set to defend the championship against Aldis in the main event of the show, but it could end up seeing Aldis battle someone else for the vacant title. Following the recent gutsy performance from Cody Rhodes in WWE who wrestled for 25 minutes with a torn pec, anything is possible right now.
