Mike Tyson has touched on the airplane punch-out incident from April 20, 2022, but on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he went into the event that everyone wanted the specifics on. After all, this story had multiple elements to it. There’s Mike Tyson–”The Baddest Man on the Planet”–being annoyed.
Now, even though Tyson has mellowed out significantly from his boxing prime where he was simply bulldozing through opponents, it’s still Iron Mike. There’s still that fear of a normal person taking one of his punches—and he’s shown that he still has those hands. So, there’s a bit of a nightmare scenario there.
Mike Tyson Opens Up on 4/20 Passenger Punching Predicament on Jimmy Kimmel
Then there’s the bothering of other passengers on a flight. Common courtesy on any kind of transit shared with a large number of passengers is to keep to yourself and don’t disturb anyone. Basically, do no harm while riding. Mind you, not everyone respects this but it’s generally respected as no one wants to be disturbed on what is essentially public transit with wings.
Actually, it’s the best way to avoid the Mike Tyson nightmare scenario. Melvin Townsend III threw both of these factors out of the window and got the expected response from the 55-year-old former World Champion. On Jimmy Kimmel, Tyson told the host:
“I was wrong, that should’ve never happened. That’s me back in my primitive child stages, I shouldn’t of done that, but I was just irritated, tired, high, and pissed off. Sh** happens!”
Those were the ingredients for the punch. Iron Mike was already not just irritated but angry, he was tired, and the man was high—probably on his own strain of bud. Of course, being high usually alleviates being “irritated” and “pissed off” but perhaps Townsend pestering Tyson prevented the high from doing its job.
On that note, no charges were pressed against the instigator or the attacker. Tyson also seems remorseful for his actions.
What do you think of Mike Tyson’s reasons for punching the passenger? Does it check out? Do you believe he should’ve been able to handle this better regardless of how irritated he was and now much of a nuisance the other passenger was being?
