Meghan Markle asserted that she was an “only child,” in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, but this week she retracted that claim. In a court document submitted on Monday in relation to Samantha Markle’s defamation action, the Duchess of Sussex’s legal team claimed that Meghan made a “subjective” comment regarding how she felt about her upbringing.
The statement that Meghan made in response to the inquiry that she “grew up as an only child” was not intended to be taken as proof that she had no biological siblings or half-siblings. Samantha Markle was alleged to have “ignored the context” of Winfrey’s inquiry, which highlighted Meghan’s “relationship” with her half-sister, who is 17 years older than she is and was raised in a different household.

It says that her sister’s claim to be able to disprove Meghan’s claim that she was raised as an only child is “inherently unfalsifiable. It is hard to imagine a more personal and subjective feeling than how one views their own childhood.” In March, Samantha Markle filed a lawsuit against Meghan for $75,000, alleging that Meghans claim that she “grew up as an only child” was defamatory because it painted her as a half-sister an “opportunist of the worst kind” who intended to profit from the fact that they were related to a famous person.
According to Cosmopolitan, she also claims that a biography titled “Finding Freedom” that was not authored by Meghan or Prince Harry has resulted in her experiencing “humiliation, shame, and hatred on a worldwide scale.” The biography’s authors, Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie have stated that the Sussexes had nothing to do with the book.
It’s possible that her communications secretary had an off-the-record conversation with the authors, but Meghan’s attorneys claimed in a document that it doesn’t matter because “Meghan did not make the statements; she cannot be liable for them. It is that simple.” When the complaint was first filed, Meghan’s attorney told TMZ that “This baseless and absurd lawsuit is just a continuation of a pattern of disturbing behavior.” and that they will pay it the minimal amount of attention that it requires.
