Lately there has been a growing narrative in the world of professional wrestling, surrounding the status of ex-WWE wrestlers in All Elite Wrestling. Fans have assumed the likes of Andrade El Idolo, Malakai Black & Miro were all upset with their spots in AEW, with a lack of TV time often cited as a top reason. However, with the case of Malakai Black – there was a very strong reason for him not being on TV in big matches fans hoped to see him in, and that involves a back injury – which nearly ended his entire career.
Malakai Black Was Nearly Forced Into Early Retirement With Back Injury
Keeping fans in the loop with a post to his official TikTok account, Black would share the following information with fans.
“Till about 3 months ago, I was dealing with a back injury that I was convinced was going to force me into retirement. But after a literal year of treatment that went from working to complete failure on several occasions, we all of a sudden hit the correct vertebrae during a dry needling session and everything released. From there, we were able to rehab and strengthen.”
Needless to say, this is a pretty damn solid reason for Black to have not been as active in the ring as fans would have hoped. People can often forget that those portraying these characters in the ring are simply human, and that injuries happen all the time. Kudos to Black for being able to show up in some big matches despite this injury, and hopefully he’s able to reach his full potential in the ring soon.
The Slow Burn Feud With Miro Suddenly Makes More Sense
Right now in AEW, Malakai Black is the man behind the House of Black faction, which has grown to include Brody King, Buddy Matthews, and Julia Hart. You can potentially add Miro into the mix as well, with him tasting the vile black mist of Black back at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. Miro is set to really lean into this angle against House of Black soon, which was perhaps kept to a slow pace as AEW evaluated the injury status of Black.
Had Black been forced into this early retirement, they could have focused on making him more of a Paul Bearer style manager. AEW had a chance to make Miro a full fledged member of House of Black to fill the void. However, now we could be on our way to a hard hitting match between Black & Miro instead. We could potentially see this match as soon as the next big AEW PPV, All Out.
