Beyoncé has been slammed for being an ‘ableist,’ as she changed her lyrics to the song ‘Heated’ amid backlash from disability advocates.
Disability Advocates Outraged As Beyoncé Bashed For Being An ‘Ableist’ With Her Lyrics To ‘Heated’-‘Feels Like A Slap In The Face’
The singer, for her part, turned heads when she included the following lyrics in her song from her Renaissance album: “Spazzin on that ass, spazz on that ass.” Spazz is an offensive terms that is short for spastic.
This can have a variety of meanings such as a stupid person, as well as referring to someone in an offensive way that they have cerebral palsy. This is a condition that makes it very hard for the body to control its muscles.
With that being said,Beyoncé has changed the lyrics. In an official statement on behalf of Beyoncé, a representative said: “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced.”
Nevertheless, this drew criticism from commentators and fans. Hannah Diviney, who happens to be a writer, expanded in an essay over how the singer’s language was out of order. And this needed to be addressed, regardless of who the source of what was in order to stamp out similar behaviour from happening once again.
In her comments, Hannah wrote: “That doesn’t excuse her use of ableist language – language that gets used and ignored all too often. Language you can be sure I will never ignore, no matter who it comes from or what the circumstances are.”
Secondly, the fans on social media were not too pleased with what the singer had done. They were of the view that she had alienated some of her fan base with the use of this language.
One person wrote: “So @Beyonce used the word ‘spaz’ in her new song Heated. Feels like a slap in the face to me.”
This serves as an example that artists need to be careful with their lyrics, as things are becoming more politically correct than ever. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
