According to the family of Gabby Petito, the Moab City PD could’ve possibly prevented her death had they dug more into the domestic dispute with Brian Laundrie—and now they’re suing for $50 million.
The Family of Gabby Petito Sues the Moab City Police Department for Wrongful Death – $50 Million Sought
The legal filing notes that the Moab City PD “failed to adequately respond to reports and evidence of domestic violence between Brian and Gabby.” If you remember the timeline of events, the two got into an argument at a co-op which became physical. The police would catch up to the two after bystanders told them of the incident.
Police observed that Gabby Petito was in distress and had cuts on her arm and face. Brian would speak to the officers and tell them that Gabby wasn’t doing well emotionally and that she attempted to slap him during the dispute. Bystanders had a different version of events from what Brian Laundrie told the officers.
In short, the Petito family feels that the police didn’t do enough at this particular point and basically allowed her to leave with her eventual killer.
According to them, their private investigator even found flaws in how the Moab City PD handled the situation and said that they “made several mistakes and could not rule out that Gabby’s murder might have been prevented if the officers had handled the situation properly.”
Steven Bertolino, the lawyer for the Laundrie family, feels that the Moab City PD “did not contribute to the death of Gabby Petito in any way.” He would go on to say:
“The intervening days and events from the Moab incident to the date of Gabby’s death appear to be far enough removed from the reasonable actions of the officers on the scene. I see no legal liability but maybe the City of Moab will settle the matter. So best of luck to the Petito family in their quest to recover for their loss from another source.”
