In an industry like professional wrestling, companies like WWE rely on a constant stream of potential performers. They’re constantly scouting for the next big name to join their company, or that one person with the potential to become a mainstay. This is why they like to hold massive tryouts surrounding events like Summerslam – and the latest tryouts would lead to 14 names getting their chance at completing the WWE dream.
WWE Looks To Find Their Future Stars With Major Tryouts
Lately, WWE has put a focus on scouting college athletes to sign – and moved away from signing experienced indy wrestlers. This was the plan for the Summerslam tryouts, as athletes from around the country would arrive in Nashville and be put through a series of drills to test their stamina, power, and athletic prowess. Triple H & Matt Bloom would oversea this tryout, and out of over 50 names – ESPN reports that only 14 would get contracts.
No one has been named at this time, but we can assume they will report to the WWE Performance Center very soon. This next crop of talent will start fresh there, and hope to improve – as WWE has put into place a stricter system with developmental, where you need to show progress or you get cut. Even names like Parker Borderaux have been cut under this new system, after he was hyped up as the ‘next Brock Lesnar’.
Fresh Names Coming To NXT 2.0 Sooner Rather Than Later?
Some indy wrestlers were invited to this tryout as well, meaning WWE could have signed some names who just need a bit of polish before making their NXT 2.0 debut. It’s likely another big try-out will come around Survivor Series, then Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, etc. Keeping these steady provides a constant flow of talent, and increases WWE chances of finding their next star.
While we don’t know who was signed – ESPN noted some names as being at this tryout, listing the following. Troy Polamalu’s nephew Talati Polamalu, North Carolina Track and Field Star Anna Keefer, Michigan State gymnast Lea Simone Mitchell.
