One of the biggest shocks in recent wrestling history was the AEW of Malakai Black. The former WWE NXT Champion was let go from the company, and showed up in AEW continuing the same character within 30 days. This was due to an error with his WWE contract, something we haven’t seen happen since. However, his AEW run has been underwhelming – and we recently found out that this was due to Black working through a nasty back injury, which almost forced him into an early retirement. He’d reflect on this, with a fittingly cryptic post to his tumblr blog.
Malakai Black Reflects On Two Years Of Pain
Even during his time in WWE, the tumblr blog of Black was a constant source of how he was truly feeling. With the name of his former indy persona Tommy End – he’d share the following post to his followers.
“2 years of this. Sometimes it feels like all of it will be to no end, nor will it have any real meaning when its all over and done. It’s strange to think certain things in your life will be a memory with no attachments anymore while they were once the most important thing in your life. It truly feels like the entire journey happened for the sake of happening.”
While some initially jumped to this being proof that Black was unhappy in his role in AEW, that instantly made no sense – as his debut was only one year ago. Instead, it being about his back injury makes much more sense. Even before his jump to AEW, he was not exactly the most active wrestler on the WWE roster – often just cutting promos in a dark room.
Booked For All Out In Trios Match
He recently claimed that the back issue was getting better, and he’s booked into a trios match for All Out this Sunday, where he will team with House Of Black allies Brody King & Buddy Matthews against Miro, Darby Allin & Sting. While on paper, this is a by the numbers trios match – Sting on PPV means some wild stunts will come, as he doesn’t waste when he steps into the ring.
It could well be the most active match we’ve seen Black in since the Fatal Four Way match at Forbidden Door, where PAC got the win to become the first ever AEW All Atlantic Championship. Black’s feud with Miro started on that night, and is set to end on Sunday. Do you think Malakai Black will become more active in the ring in 2023?
