In Detroit, Michigan, WWJ 950 overnight anchor Jim Matthews was killed in a hammer attack on September 23, 2022.
Also assaulted in the attack were Matthews’ girlfriend and their two children. Authorities arrived at the radio personality’s condo after being contacted by someone flagged down by Matthews’ girlfriend.
The suspect was revealed to the public on September 26, 2022 as Arthur Williamson (54). He was apparently known to the family and invited into the house the night prior to the attack.
Jim Matthews arrived home at 6 AM on September 23 before Williamson attacked the family around noon.

When police arrived on the scene they found Matthews’ girlfriend suffering from stab wounds while the 5-year-old suffered unspecified injuries. Emergency personnel managed to administer treatment.
Inside the house, Matthews was found dead and his 10-year-old son was found bound and beaten—but alive—in a closet.
A further inspection of the property turned up Arthur Williamson who was in the basement. He had suffered self-inflicted wounds and was overdosing on heroin. Medics would administer Narcan which saved him.
During the September 26 press conference, Chief Brian Bassett of the Chesterfield Township Police gave an update on the survivors. Matthews’ girlfriend is in stable condition, their son’s condition was upgraded from critical to stable, and their daughter was discharged from the hospital.
As for Williamson, he is also in stable condition. Charges are still being weighed but the attack is still a mystery at the moment and Chief Bassett said as much during the press conference. Per the Detroit Free Press:
“We’re doing our best to establish the timeline. We don’t have a lot of the details, we’re still working with that. As I’ve said, for the family’s privacy and healing, we’re trying to work with them as best they can. But obviously their medical care needs to be a priority.”
