On April 18, 2021, the Austin PD responded to an active shooter situation on Green Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway. Once they got on the scene, they found three victims had been shot near two vehicles.
By the time EMS arrived, all three victims were deceased. The victims included ex-wife Amanda Broderick (35), step-daughter Alyssa (17), and Alyssa’s boyfriend Willie Simmons III (18).
It turns out that Stephen and Amanda had planned a “visit with the son” when the crash occurred. Stephen Broderick began firing his gun striking the three. Their son wasn’t injured in the shooting.
After fleeing, Broderick was arrested the following morning. According to reports, the suspect was armed with a loaded pistol at the time of his arrest. It would be his fellow former deputies at the Travis County Sheriff’s Office who put the cuffs on him.
Previously, Broderick was arrested in June 2020 for assault of a family member impeding breathing/circulation and multiple counts of sexual assault of a child. Those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to the murder charges.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Broderick will serve life without parole and is barred from appealing the decision.
