Meghan Markle may not attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral following her passing at 96.
Meghan Markle May Not Attend Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral-Could Be Busy With Other Pressing Matters
That is according to former British public affairs official Shannon Felton Spence. This claim is on the basis that the Duchess of Sussex may decide to leave the UK and return home in order to be reunited with her children: Archie and Lilibet. A
After all, prior to the Queen’s death, Prince Harry and Meghan were not expecting to stay in the UK any longer. However, this is not as simple as first thought. Whatever position Meghan decides to take up, it could ultimately backfire.
If she were to attend, she could receive huge backlash on the basis that her controversial claims in her Oprah Winfrey interview and in ‘The Cut’ may have added extra strain on the Queen.
And yet, if she were not to attend, this would also be seen as rubbing salt into the wound. It could inadvertently come across as her failing to reach out at a time where there should be a symbol of unity.
This has put Meghan in a situation where she cannot totally win, which is why Shannon has questioned whether Meghan will attend the funeral.
In her comments, she said: “Harry will likely stay in the U.K. until the funeral. I can’t imagine Meghan won’t attend.
“But again from a human perspective, Meghan was expecting to leave the kids for six days, not weeks, so [it] may not be possible for her to stay the whole time.”
The response on social media was understandably mixed. It was not possible to say conclusively what Meghan should do. But some did suggest that she should make a public statement at the very least.
One person wrote: “It would be best if Meghan herself took it off the table, making in publicly clear she knows it is not about her and made simple and a heartfelt tribute to late Queen.”
