In a vile story out of the Midwest, a Michigan cannibal pleaded guilty to murder and mutilation of a corpse. Shiawassee County resident Mark Latunski (50) entered the plea on September 22, 2022, over two years after authorities found 25-year-old Kevin Bacon’s body in Latunski’s home on December 28, 2019.
Michigan Cannibal Pleads Guilty to the Christmas 2019 Murder and Mutilation of Kevin Bacon – Cannibal Reported Believes He is from Welsh Nobility
On Christmas Day 2019, Kevin Bacon was reported missing as he didn’t show up at his parents’ house for breakfast. A search was initiated but it was one friend remembering that Bacon met an older man on the dating app Grindr that really opened things up.
Authorities managed to track Bacon’s movements to the Bennington Township home of Mark Latunski and found the young man’s body hanging upside down from the ceiling.
They observed that Bacon’s throat had been slit, there were several cuts on his body as well as stab wounds to the back, several body parts were missing and that they had been eaten.
As expected, Latunski was given competency hearings while behind bars. It’s believed that an insanity defense was the play here. In a 2020 statement, Latunski’s lawyer Douglas Corwin said:
“He believes he’s named someone else. He believes he’s from a royal family out of Wales, the Thomas clan. And just the nature of the crime itself, you’ve got to send him for this evaluation.
He’s been very cooperative with our department, both of us have spoken with him. My investigator and I have gone in and talked to him. He’s cooperative, very polite. Other than the, I call them grandiose stories, he appears to really believe them.”
The defense said that they talked with Mark Latunski several times about their options at trial but are respecting his wishes with the guilty plea. Latunski was deemed mentally fit to stand trial in October 2020 but having spent time with their client resulted in his lawyers requesting another competency hearing.
Latunski’s team pursued the hearing in March 2022 but two months later a judge reaffirmed that the 50-year-old was court-ready.
The trial was scheduled to start on October 18, 2022 but with the guilty plea of open murder, Latunski’s court appearance will now be a degree hearing to determine if the act was manslaughter, first-degree or second-degree murder.
