On September 4, 2022, two communities in Saskatchewan were the site of a stabbing spree that left 10 dead and 18 citizens injured. Before 6 AM Central, brothers Damien (31) and Myles Sanderson (30) began their attacks within the James Smith Cree Nation targeting residents at different locations.
Myles Sanderson Remains At Large in Saskatchewan Stabbings Leaving 10 Dead, 18 Injured
The attacks ended shortly after 12 PM with injured and dead being reported in nearby Weldon. Damien Sanderson’s body was found “in a heavily grassed area in proximity to a house being investigated,” according to Saskatchewan RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore.
At the moment, it’s believed that Damien was killed by Myles but the timeline hasn’t solidified as the manhunt is still on for him. Myles Sanderson had wrapped up a five-year sentence in federal prison on assault and robbery charges.
When granted statutory release, instead of doing the post-release program, he simply vanished—until Sunday, September 4, 2022.
As far as motive, Blackmore said that the RCMP believes that “some victims have been targeted by the suspect and others have been attacked randomly.” The motive will become clearer as the investigation continues and if Myles Sanderson is captured alive.
In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to the country as the tragedy unfolds:
“As Canadians, we mourn with everyone affected by this tragic violence, and with the people of Saskatchewan. As this is an unfolding situation, I encourage everyone in the area to listen to the advice of law enforcement to take shelter and follow proper precautions.”
He would close by telling the James Smith Cree Nation “the people of Saskatchewan: You are in our thoughts. We are here to support you during this difficult time.”
The Sanderson Brothers’ last known vehicle was a black Nissan Rogue which was seen in Regina. In that time, it’s likely that Myles—whom the RCMP believes may be injured and seeking medical treatment—switched out vehicles and is likely aware of a national manhunt for him.
Myles Sanderson is considered armed and dangerous. The public has been warned to exercise caution by not picking up hitchhikers and being weary about who they let into their homes.
Currently, the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta are on high alert for Sanderson. The James Smith Cree Nation is in a local state of emergency until September 30.
