A Missouri man was sentenced to 60 days in jail after dressing as The Joker from the Batman franchise and livestreaming death threats in March 2020. Yes, that was over two years ago but cases often take a while before some closure on the issue occurs or a trial begins.
However, this seems like something that should’ve been concluded earlier given the details.
“Think Before You Act” Says Missouri Man Who Pleaded Guilty to Charges After Dressing as The Joker and Livestreaming Death Threats in a Restaurant
On March 2, 2020, Jeremy Garnier (51) walked into a restaurant dressed as The Joker and began making death threats while on Facebook Live. According to the Associated Press, Garnier bought a soda and said “I can’t be inebriated when I’m planning on, you know, killing a bunch of people.”
Given that mass shootings is an evergreen issue in the country, coming into an public establishment and making death threats—even as promotion or a “social experiment”—is going to result in police response.
As expected, officers with the University City Police showed expecting an active shooter situation but found that Garnier was unarmed. He was taken into custody and on September 16, 2022, he pleaded guilty to third-degree terrorist threat. The judge gave him 60 days in jail suspended with time served and included a couple of restrictions.
Garnier will have to abide by the usual no firearms, booze, or drugs condition and can not wear makeup in public. On that note, his social media presence is to be limited to promotion and showcasing his art. He will be in violation if he uses it for performance art or anything similar to why he was arrested in the first place.
That means no makeup or costumes while on social media. Finally, he is prohibited from going to or contacting Blueberry Hill, the restaurant where he made the threats.
