Recently, a match on AEW Dark: Elevation got some serious attention on social media. It saw Athena take on Canadian indy wrestling star Jody Threat – and was one of the hardest hitting matches in the history of the AEW Women’s division. Many took issue with it, feeling the match was overall unsafe and dangerous – despite both ladies being completely unharmed by it. Even AEW management was fooled, making sure there was no bad blood following the match.
AEW Management Was Quick To Insure No Issues
This match would feature many stiff strikes, and a spot where Athena would dump Threat over the top rope to the floor with a suplex. However, despite it looking more like a violent brawl than a sanctioned wrestling match – everything was done with purpose. Fightful Select would report that those close to Athena noted both ladies were approached by management following the match – ensuring everything was okay.
There was no backstage confrontations to speak of, rather just Athena opting to play a heel role due to Threat getting a massive reaction in her home country of Canada. What followed was an incredibly effective match, showing the skills of both performers in the cramped five minute time-slot that came with Dark: Elevation.
Jody Threat Getting The Attention She Deserves Following Athena Match
Threat herself didn’t complain or really speak on the match with her preferring to just keep head down – have great matches, and avoid the politics of the industry as best she can. This match put a major spotlight on Threat, who has been active in the industry since 2017 – having 293 matches since her debut. It was her AEW debut, and to have people talking this much about YouTube exclusive match is not a bad thing.
Many have called for AEW to consider signing Threat to their ever growing women’s division. She’s got clear talent, and would be a benefit to the division. We can expect Threat to atleast pop up on Dark again in the future, with a more proper try-out potentially in her future. Should AEW hire Jody Threat for the AEW Women’s division?
