There are new rumored developments in the drama that is AEW’s backstage fight after the All Out Media Scrum where his comments about the Young Bucks and the Elite in general didn’t go over well.
Since Punk’s been out with a torn triceps and the others involved in the fight have been suspended, there have been plenty of rumors.
On thing that stuck out to us and many others about the media scrum was how Punk seemed to be the one in charge when he cut off and talked over Tony Kahn a few times as he ranted and Kahn nodded along.
Many have called for Punk to be released for Kahn to take back any power he gave him and establish himself as the boss and not second fiddle to Punk.
Now, it looks like Kahn may be doing just that, according to Dave Meltzer.
Growing pains
Meltzer wrote about this in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and it looks like Kahn may be buying out the remainder of Punk’s contract, which would end his run in AEW.
“Those with close knowledge of the situation said they are in talks with Punk about a buy-out of the remaining years of his contract which tells you that they are not looking to bring him back. The hold-up right now is said to be the non-compete period.
“Obviously if the non-compete is an issue, it’s about interest in going to WWE because there’s no need for a non-compete otherwise because nobody else but AEW and WWE can pay him close to what he was making.”
While there’s been no news about whether the WWE is interested in bringing Punk back, it would be an interesting development if he returned home, so to speak.
If anything, this will be a valuable learning experience as it’s been reported that Punk threw the first punch when he was confronted.
However this shakes out, there’s no denying that Punk’s run in AEW is a missed opportunity for both him and the company.
There was so much potential and fans were so excited to see Punk back in action, and to go out like this could put him into the same conversations with Terrell Owens.
Of course, these are just rumors and they are just talking about this, so there’s theoretically a chance for the two sides to come to an understanding, but that could also undermine Kahn’s authority going forward.
What do you think will happen? Is Punk’s AEW career over or will they find a way to get past this? Let us know in the comments below.
