Police corruption is a particular issue in India and it is taken seriously as the Hyderabad Police have shown after booting over 55 officers and personnel from the force.
Among the 55 who were dismissed, some had been slapped with suspension, termination, or forced to retire due to complaints filed against them between December 25, 2021 and October 7, 2022.
Hyderabad Police Kicks More Than 55 Officers and Personnel to Combat Complaints and Corruption
It seems as though the Hyderabad Police had enough of the complaints. The complaints against officers ranged in severity from bribery to crimes against women.
One now-former member of the force—Inspector K. Nageswara Rao—was accused of violating the Arms Act, kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder in a bid to conceal evidence.
Initially, he was simply suspended until the Hyderabad and Telangana Police really looked into the complaints. More charges were levied as they dug into the complaints. A statement on the Rao investigation reads:
“In Koratla Nageswara Rao’s case, there is every possibility that he (under suspension) may intimidate and influence the victims and witnesses thereof during the regular course of departmental enquiry. He has a criminal bent of mind which is amply proved and he can go to any extent to threaten, influence and intimidate the victims and witnesses.”
Other offenses against officers include murder, habitual unauthorized absence from duty, corruption, using illegal substances, being intoxicated while on duty, rape, misbehavior with seniors and the public, bigamy, domestic violence, and more. If it wasn’t supposed to be done as a Hyderabad officer, those dismissed did it.
