Friends star Matthew Perry recently discussed his fight with opioid addiction and even mentioned that he almost died a few years ago when his colon burst due to drug abuse.
Matthew Perry Says He “Nearly Died” After His Colon Burst from Drug Abuse Years Ago
The frightening episode occurred in August 2018 when he was 49. What he experienced was a gastrointestinal perforation. In speaking with People, he said that his family was told that he had a 2-percent chance to live after his colon burst.
He was hooked up to an ECMO machine that handles the body’s respiratory and cardiovascular functions.
In all, this resulted in him being in a coma for two weeks and being in the hospital for five months receiving surgery and further treatment. Perry also said that he would have to use a colostomy bag for nine months after the ordeal.
Fortunately for Matthew Perry and his friends, family, and fans, he made recovery, pursued addiction treatment, and is now 53.
He would discuss failing at treatment and relapsing but said that remembering the stomach scars and the colostomy bag are motivations to steer clear of Oxycontin:
“It’s important, but if you lose your sobriety, it doesn’t mean you lose all that time and education. Your sober date changes, but that’s all that changes.”
Perry sat down with People in the lead-up to his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing which drops November 1, 2022.
