In professional wrestling, perhaps the most important job in the ring is to protect your opponent. While to fans it’s supposed to look like they’re looking to beat each other, wrestling is a performance art – and you’re putting faith in your opponent to make sure everything goes according to plan. It just takes a few accidents to build a bad reputation, and that was the case for Seth Rollins.
Over his career in WWE, there were two notable injuries caused by Seth Rollins. First, a buckle bomb gone wrong would put Sting into retirement – and another one would put Finn Balor on the shelf. That’s all it took to put a black cloud over the head of Seth Rollins, but his Hell in a Cell Match with Cody Rhodes has done a lot to help that.
Seth Rollins Wrestling An Injured Cody Rhodes Helped His Reputation
While speaking with Ariel Helwani of BT Sport, Rollins had the following to say about the five star match.
“You know, the thing about that situation is, it really went a long way in repairing my reputation. I had gotten so much flak online for some injuries that had happened in matches that I was in. Whether they were caused by me directly or indirectly, is a whole different can of worms, but I think people were like, ‘Oh, maybe he does know how to take care of people in the ring.’ But it was, I think, more visually jarring than anything. Our doctors would have never let him compete if there was risk for further injury to the pec.
Was there danger to injuring other parts of his body because of his ineptness in his right pectoral muscle? Absolutely. Was there danger for me in, you know, being in there with someone who only has one good arm? Absolutely. But again, we’re professionals, and so we can design these matches to take care of each other in ways that still create captivating stories and moments, and I think in some ways, the match may not have been as special without that visual of his completely torn, and bloody, and bruised arm, chest, and belly, and whatever was going on there. So yeah, I mean, it’s one of those things where you make the best out of it. In this situation, our best was pretty damn good that night.”
