Chinese football fans have been provided with a censored version of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in order to prevent large unmasked crowds from reaching the local population where political unrest has been ongoing after harsh Covid measures were introduced.
Chinese Government Censors Fifa World Cup Amid Mass Unrest In The Country
China’s CCTV broadcasting company has been blocking images of the crowd via a 30-second delay, according to reports. This has been on the basis that China still faces harsh restrictions under its Covid Zero policy.
Therefore, images showing maskless fans have been removed. As of now, Chinese citizens have been compelled to take Covid tests daily, and large street protests have broken out, with people demanding that the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, step down.
The zero-covid policy by the Chinese leader has been slammed, as cases soar. And in a desperate attempt to keep things in order, the censoring of the World Cup has happened.
In the clip here, we can see that the Chinese feed shows members of the crowd being blurred out. In comparison, the original footage of the World Cup shows fans not wearing masks as they take in the atmosphere.
The footage also shows that there is a 30-second delay. The post was captioned by the following comments: “So I thought it was BS that China’s govt broadcaster was censoring shots of fans at the World Cup due to lockdown anger back home.
“But it’s true.” The social media response was one of mass condemnation. A significant proportion of people could not believe that something like this was happening in the current day. Therefore, people were left shocked by it all.
One person wrote: “Just unbelievable. Credit to the CCP censorship and propaganda dept,” while another person stated: “Yea the most absurd things you heard about China are true.”
This is another damning indictment on the CCP, as the party faces serious questions over its credibility. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
