Friends Star Matthew Perry Recalls ‘Drinking Every Day’
The star of ‘Friends’ has spoken extensively about his issues with alcohol and drugs that have resulted in him attending rehab for around 15 times. And as part of that process, Perry was promoting his new memoir ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.’
It is here and his interview with Diane Sawyer where he discussed his battle with addiction which has allegedly resulted in him being in therapy for three decades.
And it was during his teenage years that he ended up drinking a ‘bottle of wine,’ which really foreshadowed his future troubles. Since that moment, Perry could not stop.
In his comments, he said: “[I] had never drank before…’By the time I was 18, I was drinking every day.” The problems with alcohol then turned into issues with prescription medication.
Perry expanded on how he began to take some painkillers following a jet ski accident in 1997. This had occurred during the course of filming for the movie ‘ Fools Rush In.’
And before you knew it, Perry became dependent on the drugs to function as they became a part of his daily routine with catastrophic consequences.
His following comments confirmed as much: “I had to wake up and realise I needed to get 55 [Vicodin pills] or I was going to be really sick.”
Despite those issues, Matthew did admit that he never took anything while he was on the set of Friends. After all, he was on one of the biggest shows in the world with the world at his feet.
Therefore, he knew that he did not want to do anything that could jeopardise this situation. And yet, prior to coming on the set, he did admit that he may have been feeling the consequences of abusing his body previously.
He added: “I made a rule that I would never drink or take anything at work,’ Perry said. ‘So I would never do that, but I would show up blindly hungover. Like shaking.”
