Lake Mead is going through continuous water level decline and has turned up six skeletal remains this year. The most recent discovery was made by divers on October 18, 2022. While that instantly raises there question of “Where are all these bodies coming from,” the first thought shouldn’t go to dumped bodies in all case.

According to the National Park Service, divers discovered the remains on October 18 following up on another diver who stumbled upon a human bone on October 17. At the moment, foul play isn’t suspected and could just be someone who drowned in the lake, upstream somewhere, or committed suicide. When foul play is removed, anything could’ve transpired which means answers are needed regardless.
Starting with a discovery on May 1, 2022, a boater found a barrel that had bones inside after he went over to investigate a scream from the beach. Homicide detectives in Las Vegas investigated the find and found that the person in the barrel was murdered “sometime in the mid ’70s to early ’80s, based on clothing and footwear the victim was found with.”
On May 7, remains turned up and in August, the Park Service identified the remains as Thomas P. Erndt who was missing since August 2002. The belief here is that Erndt drowned but nothing indicates foul play. Three other discoveries were made in late July into early August.
Lt. Ray Spencer of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police noted that because the water level dropping contributed to the body in the barrel turning up. In speaking with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Spencer said:
“The water level has dropped so much over the last 30 to 40 years that, where the person was located, if a person were to drop the barrel in the water and it sinks, you are never going to find it unless the water level drops.”
