In an interesting case of “Where’s the drugs” police in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh claim that roughly 600kg of marijuana was eaten by rats. That’s almost 1,300 pounds of marijuana missing at the worst time.
Police In India Claim Rats Ate Almost 600kg of Marijuana as Drug Trafficking Trials Start
The drugs were seized in several busts and put into two storerooms as evidence. These busts included one in 2018 and another in 2019. In total, six were arrested as alleged smugglers and now it’s their time in court.
Apparently, these storerooms didn’t have the best pest control over the five years that the drugs were held—according to Mathura authorities. It is claimed that in that time, rats got into the storage areas and are 581kg in marijuana. Public prosecutor Ranveer Singh addressed the missing evidence to the court:
“There is no place in the police station where the stored goods can be saved from the rats. The remaining [cannabis] from the huge consignment was destroyed by officers.”
While authorities provided samples of the evidence that was seized, the law dictates that the actual haul of drugs must be presented for a concrete conviction. This case prompted the court to issue an order for drugs to be stored safely as a reported 700kg of marijuana is in danger of being eaten by rats in Mathura.
Drugs aren’t the only thing targeted by rats, in the neighboring dry state of Bihar, rats drank a million liters of alcohol in 2017. It appears that either police departments will have to strengthen its pest control procedures or come up with fail-safes regarding stored evidence.
