There continues to be more news coming out at more changes Triple H is allegedly making to the WWE product.
He’s made some great moves that have shifted the WWE’s focus away from the entertainment aspect toward more of a sports based wrestling style, and part of that has been removing gimmick based events and it looks like Triple H is returning another to its original format.
Triple H Bringing Back Classic 1980s King of the Ring Format
There have been reports that he’s doing away with the current King of the Ring format where the tournament happens over weeks leading up to the finals to the 1980s style of al the tournament matches being held at the event.
If this is true, it’ll mark the first time since 2002 that the King of the Ring actually had the entirety of the King of the Ring tournament, and it’ll be a welcomed change.
We loved the old style and it made the event something to watch because of it. But having the tournament being spread out over weeks and making it just another event without anything special about it.
Changing directions
While it can be argued the King of the Ring as a regular pay-per-view is outdated, the truth is it’s supposed to highlight the wrestler the company views as their next big star, whether through resurgence of a career boost to a younger star.
In our opinion, having it spread out over weeks takes away from the spectacle of the event, and in many ways the winner can be easily forgotten by the fans since it was spread out.
But if it happens in the same show, we get to see some wrestlers compete multiple times and it helps build a following through their repeated appearances.
WrestleVotes spoke with Louis Dangoor of Givemesport.com about this.
“There’s a very good chance that King of the Ring is back, and likely back in the format that had happened in the late eighties. The idea is that every single match will happen that night.
“In the nineties, a lot of the matches happened on Superstars and Raw, with the semifinals and finals on pay-per-view. If it’s going to come back on pay-per-view, which I would say is probably going to happen, you’re going to have a full-on one-night tournament.”
To further explain why Triple H would do this, WrestleVotes said it comes down to Triple H’s love for traditional wrestling.
“I mean, tournament wrestling is old school wrestling, and Hunter loves old school wrestling. If it still makes sense, especially when you have 500 people on the roster, you can do it. That’s what they’re going to do.”
We expect this to be a popular decision by the fans as there’s few things more entertaining as a tournament in one sitting, and it’ll be fun to see King of the Ring return to its roots, so to speak.
